Training Dog Collars: The Shock Collar, Choke Collar, and Citronella Collar


Training dog collars are a very integral part in teaching your dog basic obedience commands such as ‘sit,’ ‘heel,’ or ‘stay.’  By training your dog using a training dog collar you can teach your pet to do what you say, this will keep your pet safe, and those around him safe.  Below are a list of training dog collars and their functions:

Shock Collar (electronic dog-training collar)-The shock collar does exactly what it says, it sends an electric shock to your dog when it does something wrong.  There is a transmitter—which you hold like a remote that can send different levels of shock to the receiver on the shock collar, which will then shock your pet.   After receiving 3-4 shocks, your dog will notice that in doing the same action over and over again, he will feel the shocking pain and he will not do that again.  This is helpful for any bad behavior that happens in the home, like chewing shoes, couches, carpets, or climbing on furniture.

Choke Collar-The choke caller can be the most effective training dog collar or a dangerous one if not used property.  This training collar is made out of a chain, which loosens and tightens with the tug of the leash.  Historically this collar was made to pinch the brachial nerve, which would only feel like a pinching of the funny bone in humans.  It was by no means a way to actually choke a dog.  When purchasing a Choke Collar the owner must make sure that there is enough space and room for the dogs neck so that the choke does not squeeze too tightly.

Citronella Collar-This collar is mainly effective to reduce the amount dog barking.  When the collar is on the dog there is a receptor that can detect when the dog barks, this will cause a Citronella spray to be released from the collar.   Dogs don’t like this smell, but once they associate barking with the Citronella they will know not to bark.  This is an effective and safe way to reduce the noise your dog creates by barking

Training dog collars play a very important role in raising your dog. The shock collar, The choke collar and the citronella collar are very effective tools to helping your dog stay obedient and safe.
